Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers (KIPT) has lodged an application to develop a deep-water wharf facility at Smith Bay to export plantation timber from Kangaroo Island. Currently there is no such facility on Kangaroo Island. It is anticipated that timber-carrying ships would use the wharf for about 50 to 75 days a year.
If approved, the facility would consist of:
– a causeway, extending to a floating pontoon berth
– berthing pocket
– tug mooring facilities
– retaining structures and mooring dolphins
– stockpile, storage and laydown areas
– ship loading systems
– ancillary facilities and services.
Harvested timber products would be transported to the wharf via public roads.
